Buried by an avalanche on a Colorado mountain road, Jim Henderson clawed his way out of his SUV and felt bone-crushing ice and snow holding him fast. He grew colder while he fought exhaustion, and after the third night in the deep-freeze he was ready to give up and become a human icicle. But he spotted a ramshackle cabin on a distant hill and was able to reach it before nightfall.

About Stan Bailey

Stan Bailey's career as a newspaper reporter and free lance writer extends 40 years. For 32 of those years, he was a Birmingham News reporter in the newspaper's Montgomery, AL Bureau. Previously he worked in Harrisburg, PA, Savannah, GA, Hollywood, FL, and interned in Memphis, TN, and Jackson, MS. Stan was born and grew up on a farm in Vardaman, MS, which bears the nickname of "sweet potato capital of the world."

The dim glow of moonlight outlined a high-backed wooden rocker’s silhouette against the cabin window.

Its upright frame swayed back and forth as freezing winds moaned through gaps in the cabin walls; and its base, hidden in darkness, thumped like a heartbeat over cracks in the heart-pine floor.
